Description/Information
Tracks 1 to 6
For Kick In we decided to use three different microphones which were the 421, B52 and E901. We placed them roughly 4 to 5 inches from the beater. You can also try placing it with a slight tilt to reduce the attack if it is too clicky.
For Kick Out we used the D112 and RE20. We placed them around 5 inches away from the skin. We also placed the D112 at two different positions. Out from the sound hole and out from the center of the kick. We kept the RE20 out from the sound hole only as we liked the sound it produced. For all the Kick Out recordings we have an EQ cutting 150 Hz with –10 dB gain. We felt it sounded too boomy without the EQ on.
Tracks 7 to 11
We recorded the Snare with four different microphones, the C414, SM57, RE20 and E905. We placed them all at the same position facing in between the rim and center of the snare and approximately 8 inches from the center of the snare. We also placed a wallet on the snare to deaden the ring and unwanted resonance. We decided to recorded the Snare Bottom as well with an SM57 as some engineers would like to blend Snare Bottom with Top to make the ring more present.
Tracks 12 to 15
We used four different microphones to record the Hi-Hat. The C414, SM57, SM81 and RE20. We placed them all at the opposite side of where the drummer hits with the stick.
Tracks 16 to 18
For the Floor Tom we used the same three microphones and placed them at the rim of the Floor Tom, the 1 or 2 o'clock position, facing the center of the skin.
Tracks 19 to 21
For the Tom we used three microphones which were the 421, C414 and SM57. We placed them facing in between the rim and center of the skin since that is where we found the source to be the loudest.
Tracks 22 to 24
For the Overheads we used a variation of the XY method (can also be called a Crossover) where we placed the left Overhead microphone (Audience Perspective) facing the right side of the kit and the right Overhead microphone facing the left side of the kit. The two microphones meet at the center of the drum kit while their height can vary depending to taste. We used a pair of Rode M5s, a pair of C414s and a pair of P170s.
